Jaunpur

Medieval Sultanate capital on the Gomti, known for its mosques, bridges, and overlooked cuisines.

Jaunpur

For a century and a half between the 14th and 16th centuries, Jaunpur was the seat of the Sharqi Sultanate — a court of poets, architects, and musicians whose distinctive mosques (Atala, Jama, Lal Darwaza) still stand. The city sits on the Gomti, which the Mughal-era Shahi Bridge still crosses. Today it is a district town with small industries and a quieter cultural life than its Mughal-era importance might suggest, but the architecture and the food tell you it was once a capital.
