Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur
Gateway to the eastern plains, tied to the Nath tradition and the terai country beyond.

Gorakhpur takes its name from the Nath yogi Gorakhnath, whose math continues to shape the religious and political life of the city. As a railway junction, it connects the eastern plains to Bihar and Nepal. Writers as different as Premchand and Firaq Gorakhpuri were shaped here. The surrounding districts of the terai — forests, rivers, border country — lend the city a texture quite distinct from Varanasi or Allahabad.
