Azamgarh
Azamgarh
Literary town with a long tradition of Urdu poetry, scholarship, and agrarian life.

Azamgarh has long been a town of scholars. It is associated with the Urdu scholar Shibli Nomani and the polyglot traveller Rahul Sankrityayan, whose home at Pandaha village is within the district. Mubarakpur, near the town, is one of the oldest weaving centres in eastern UP — a parallel tradition to Banaras that produces distinct silk weaves. Much of the district remains agrarian, with a strong tradition of migration.
